One Church, Many Gatherings

Every week in Devonport, the Church meets in different places and ways. Some gather in historic buildings, others in schools, warehouses, or homes. Some with hymns and tradition, others with modern music and song. Each gathering is unique, but one thing remains the same—all share the same centre: Jesus.

For more than 25 years, local church leaders have chosen to walk together under the banner “One Church, Many Gatherings.” That commitment is not about making every church the same. It’s about unity that honours difference, a recognition that, like honey flowing down from its source, goodness and life are meant to move outward and downward—nourishing not just church communities, but the whole city.

The psalmist writes, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity… for there the Lord bestows his blessing” (Psalm 133:1,3). In a world where division often makes the headlines, churches in Devonport are choosing another way. Instead of competing for attention or resources, leaders meet weekly to pray, encourage one another, and ask how they can serve the community better together.

At the heart of that unity is the gospel—the good news at the centre of the Christian faith: that through Jesus’ death and resurrection, people can be reconciled to God and discover new life. This shared faith is what binds all Devonport church gatherings together as one and gives shape to their hope, a hope not found in themselves but in Christ who makes all things new.

Flowing from that unity and hope are tangible expressions of love—chaplaincy in schools, mentoring for young people, care for families in need, and collective events like Together for Easter, One Voice Devonport – A Day of Prayer, and the Christmas in Devonport celebrations, where churches stand side by side to bring joy and practical support to the wider community. At the heart of it all is our desire to follow the example of Jesus, who said, “I did not come to be served, but to serve.”

This kind of collaboration is not only spiritual—it’s social. It strengthens the fabric of the community. It means children at school know there’s someone to turn to. It means people facing hardship can find support. And it shows that faith, when lived out in unity, makes a tangible difference for everyone.

At the centre of it all is love—love we experience in deeply human ways, but which flows from the heart of God revealed in Christ. It shows up in generosity, loyalty, and care. Many gatherings, one Church, one Lord, one gospel, one hope—and a shared desire to see Devonport flourish.
