Beginning Formation
As we move into week two of Practising the Way, we’re invited to pause and reflect on a simple but profound truth: every one of us is being formed by something or someone, whether we realise it or not. Formation is always happening. The real question is not if we are being shaped, but what is shaping us — and whether that formation is intentional.
Our key verse this week comes from Romans 12:2, where the Apostle Paul encourages believers:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
— Romans 12:2 (NIV)
These words remind us that formation sits at the heart of discipleship. It moves us beyond simply believing in Jesus to intentionally following His way in our everyday lives. Transformation begins internally, shaping how we think, respond and live, so that our lives increasingly reflect the life of Christ.
Throughout this week we are encouraged to consider the influences that shape who we are becoming — our habits, relationships, stories, environment, experiences and the way we use our time. Each of these quietly but powerfully forms us over time. When we begin to notice them, we also begin to see the opportunity to place them more intentionally under the influence of Jesus.
It’s helpful to remember that there is a significant difference between conforming and formation. Conformity is about aligning our behaviour, attitudes or beliefs to fit in or gain approval. Formation, however, is about allowing our lives to be shaped into something new and meaningful — a process that flows from intentional choices and a desire to live differently as we follow Jesus.
Our hope for this week is that as we practise the way of Jesus together, we would move from simply wanting to be liked or accepted by those around us, to becoming people deeply motivated by love, grace and peace. As that happens, our lives begin to reflect the way of Jesus more naturally — at home, at work, in our churches and across our community.
